Location: Saigon, Vietnam

Saigon Eclipse takes place in present day Ho Chi Minh City. It is inspired by the characters and themes of Nguyen Du's 19th century masterpiece The Story of Kieu, a work considered to be the most important epic poem written in Vietnamese. This ancient story relates the destiny of a young, beautiful and talented Vietnamese woman who sacrifices herself for her family. This epic poem chronicles the fate of Kieu, a beautiful young girl, who soon after her secret engagement, returns home to find her father is about to be imprisoned on trumped up charges. Kieu offers herself in payment for her fathers debt without fully understanding the ramifications of the decision. A stunning and tragic story of loyalty and the perils of beauty, it was written as an allegory for Nguyen Du's beautiful country Vietnam, which has often been possessed and abused by others. Directed by Othello Khanh(France). Starring Dustin Nguyen(USA), Truong Ngoc Anh(Vietnam), Marjolaine Bui(France), Johnny Nguyen(USA), Nhu Quyen(Vietnam), Daniel You(France), Edmund Chen(Singapore), Joseph Chen Tseng(Hong Kong)

Dustin Nguyen as Kim

Dustin Nguyen has established himself as one of Hollywood’s premiere Asian-American actors, first starring in television hit series such as “21 Jump Street,” “SeaQuest 2032” and “V.I.P.”. In the US, 21 Jump Street established Nguyen as the first primetime Asian heartthrob. In Europe, it was the “Hero” campaign for Levi Jeans’ that expanded his international profile. For his work, Nguyen has won numerous awards including a 2000 Ammy Award, the Asian equivalent of the Emmy for Best Male Actor. He is currently filming “Rebel” in Ho Chi Minh City in which he has the starring role. Filmography • “The Rebel” (filming) • “Little Fish” • “Hundred Percent” • “The Doom Generation” • “Virtuosity” • “3 Ninjas Kick Back” • “Heaven & Earth” • “No Escape, No Return” • “Rapid Fire Kim - The Character At age 35 Kim, born in Vietnam, having left at age 10, and raised in middle America, has returned to Vietnam to explore and participate in the new Vietnamese cinema. He is an actor/director definitely on his way up. He has come back to Vietnam to explore his roots and direct the action picture “Saigon Eclipse.” In the process he has fallen head over heels in love with his co-star Kieu. Kim is a pusher with a good sense of humor who controls with laughter. His determination to get what he wants is evident both on and off the set. A good pool player and a gambler by nature he is all about competition and being best at what he does. He is straight forward and honest and sees the world as his stage. His greatest fear is failure and he works hard to overcome this in all his actions. He tends to think the world will serve him.

Truong Ngoc Anh as Kieu

Truong Ngoc Anh has collected prestigious national and international awards for her work as both a top actress and model. She is probably the most popular actress and movie star in Vietnam today. She started her cinema career in 1992 and since then has moved from one success to another until today when she has become a major industry force and business leader. Filmography • “The White Silk Dress” • “Bride of Silence” • “Pregnant Husband” • “Rain” • “War Without Bullets” • “Journey Of Life” • ‘I Swear” • “The Red Pirate” • “Michael Jackson and Me” • “I Have Only You” Kieu - The Character Kieu is a beautiful and driven young woman - a star of the Vietnamese entertainment world who has fallen in love with her director, Kim. Seemingly on her way to a wonderful marriage and International stardom, she is suddenly faced with a life-changing dilemma. Discovering that her mother is about to be used to pay off a debt created by her dishonest uncle Henry, Kieu offers herself as payment to save her mother from humiliation and abuse. Not realizing what a tragic and dangerous situation she has placed herself in, she resigns herself to a world full of abuse and lost dreams.

Marjolaine Bui as Vanessa

Marjolaine Bui is best known as the girl who stole the show on the French series “Greg le Millionaire” and went on to her own reality series “Marjolaine et les Millionnaires.” She is a real Viet Kieu, returning to find her homeland, like her character Vanessa. “Saigon Eclipse” will be her introduction to the feature film. Vanessa - The Character Vanessa is a young tourist drawn to Vietnam by her family’s recent history. She is a fine athlete and was the captain of her school Judo team. She is American in her attitudes, and comfortable seeking out liaisons for pleasure and not love. She has no scruples about using this sexuality to further her own ends. Arrogant, sure of herself and of her Western culture, it is only a matter of time before she finds herself reacting to the constraints of Vietnamese society. Her gradual immersion into Vietnamese culture erases once and for all her ‘modern’ Western ways and her “me first” attitude.

Johnny Nguyen as Trong Hai

Johnny Nguyen “Minh Tri”, began his movie careen in Hollywood as a stuntman in 1998. Since, 2002 he has appeared in several US and Asian productions. In 2004 he was a stunt double in both “Spiderman 2” and “Collateral.” “Saigon Eclipse” will be his first major part in a movie, moreover in a Vietnamese one. Johnny is also famous as a singer among the American Viet Kieu (overseas Vietnamese) community. He is currently in Vietnam, directing “The Rebel,” his first feature film. Filmography • “The Rebel” (filming) • “Adventures of Johnny Tao: Rock Around the Dragon” • “Tom Yum Goong” • “Demon Hunter” • “Sledge: The Story of Frank Sledge” • “First Morning” • “Max Havoc” • “Ella Enchanted” • “Cradle 2 the Grave” • “The Master of Disguise” • “We Were Soldiers” Trong Hai - The Character Handsome, quiet, athletic and a stuntman, full of ambiguities, he inspires confidence in those around him. His unknown job is that of an undercover cop. His assignment: to find out the truth about uncle Henry, Ba Tu and the marriage bureau “Happy Brides,” that is suspected of trafficking in children. Trong Hai is closer to the Vietnamese archetype than at first it would seem. He has a strong sense of Vietnam’s past and agrees with the ideas of loyalty and duty. He is attracted to Vanessa and this leads to trouble.

Nhu Quynh as Ba Tu

Nhu Quynh was awarded the title “Artist of Excellence” (NSUT) by the Vietnam Ministry of Culture and Information. She started her career over 25 years ago beginning with “Indochine”. Since then, she has been involved in 10 foreign films and countless Vietnamese films and television projects. Recently, she played the mistress in Tran Anh Hung’s “Cyclo” and then starred in his latest film, “Vertical Ray of the Sun.” Filmography (selected) • “The Chinese Botanist’s Daughters” • “Bride of Silence” • “At the Height of Summer” • “Cyclo” • “Indochine” • “We’ll Be Seeing Us Again” Ba Tu - The Character Kieu’s mother is a survivor. Sold as a child, she continually fears for the fate of her daughter, Kieu. She was won by Henry in a card game and although they live in seeming harmony there is no guarantee of her or Kieu’s destiny. Her love for Kieu is expressed in her every action. Ba Tu is greedy for money which she feels will buy her and Kieu’s safety. Her part in the Marriage Bureau is that of the business person. She controls the finances of the feature film although booth the money and the decisions come from Henry. She is enigmatic and it is always hard to know her true feelings and motivations. She is a religious person who uses her prayer beads constantly. This sometimes gives her feelings away.

Dan You as Henry

Dan You, comes to us after an exhaustive search for an actor who first of all has not only Vietnamese roots but European sensibilities. Raised in France, he now spends his time between France and Vietnam. He embodies much of the continental flair of our Henry. Dan You is also an award winning artist who represents Pierre Cardin in this region. Henry - The Character Henry is charming, weak, and always pandering to his desires for the easy life. He has an addictive personality which leads him to continually live in a world of half realized dreams. He trades in children no differently than Kieu’s father did and hides it from the public through the Marriage Bureau. Even Ba Tu the accountant for the business is not aware of all the details. He is a gambler and at times has won spectacularly as he did when he won Ba Tu. However over time his losses at the tables have put him, his life style, and Ba Tu at risk. Thinking his charm will find a way through his present debt problems, he does not face reality soon enough and this is catastrophic for him.

Edmund Chen as Long

Edmund Chen is one of the busiest among Singapore-based Media Corp’s roster of stars. He starred in “Turn Left, Turn Right” for Warner Brothers Hong Kong in 2003. As well as appearing in over 60 television series in his career so far, he is a recognized singer in Asia and has released 4 albums. We will be the 10th film Edmund is to appear in. Filmography • “Turn Left, Turn Right” • “The Eye” • “Sharp Pencil” • “Ghostories” • “Where Got Problem” • “Yellow Wedding” • “Supercop” • “Eternal Love” • “Silver Lining” Long - The Character Long is seemingly a quiet nice person; an assistant to Chen who pays the bills and takes good care of his master. He reflects the perfect butler. Underneath he has his own pretensions and is ruthless and cruel. He is also avaricious and one day wants to become the Tong leader that Chen now is.

Joseph Tseng Chang as Chen

Joseph Chang Tseng is a major star, respected director and successful producer in his native Hong Kong – and by extension, in China and much of Asia. In Canada since 1994, he has played character roles on such films as “Shanghai Noon” and “Romeo Must Die,” “The Family,” “Ming Fong,” “Rose Cliff,” “Romance of Snow Land,” Golden Eagle,” and “South Sea Surf” are a few of his early films. He starred in “Cheaters” with Mary Tyler. He had a lead in the award winning Mina Shum feature “Long Life, Prosperity, and Happiness” that premiered at the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. At the 2006 Leo Awards, Tseng is nominated for two of the prestigious British Columbia Film golden lions. Filmography (selected) • “Everything’s Gone Green” • “Inconvenience” • “Bamboo Shoot” • “Betraying Reason” • “The In-Laws” • “Agent Cody Banks” • “A Guy Thing” • “Cheats” • “Long Life, Happiness & Prosperity” • “Shanghai Noon” • “Romeo Must Die” Chen - The Character A Tong leader for many years, Chen comes with all the guile and ability one would expect. Secretive and powerful, he rules his men without open feelings. His successful but illegal business of trafficking in humans, both adult and children, keeps him surrounded by unscrupulous associates. He has a long memory and sooner or later will get his way. He is not without manners or wit but in the end he is deadly.
